Music is vibrant at QEHS, with the focus being on creating music of a high standard which involves as many students as possible. The ensembles we currently run are:

  • Swing Band
  • Choir
  • Chamber Choir
  • Flute Choir
  • Cinematic Percussion Ensemble
  • Guitar Ensemble
  • String Ensemble

Many students play more than one instrument in school, and there are many students who have private lessons outside school and take part in school ensembles.

We run GCSE and A Level Music courses and are well resourced as a department, with a suite of computers with both Sibelius and Cubase, a range of music practice rooms, a class set of djembe, and a full samba kit.

We put on two main concerts each year with all school ensembles (Christmas and Spring). The Choirs and senior instrumentalists are also invited to take part in the annual “Carols For All” celebration at Gainsborough All Saints’ Church in mid-December with Gainsborough Choral Society and Lincoln Pro Musica Orchestra.

Other music performances include numerous small recitals through the school year, including MAD (Music and Drama evenings), and the Guitar and Drum Recital, and events organised by Lincolnshire Music Service. Year 7 students put on their own musical production each year (for example, Lion King, Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast), which ensures that they are excited by and involved in music right from their early days in the school. House Music is a competitive student-run event which takes place in February. The Music Department also offers students the opportunity to take their Bronze Arts Award qualification.

The whole-school production takes place in the Summer Term; recent productions include Grease, Wizard of Oz, Legally Blonde and West Side Story.

Instruments in school

If your child is bringing an instrument to school (hired or privately owned), it must have a QEHS name tag on the case. Please fill in the form found here and email it to [email protected] and the Music Department will create a tag for your child’s instrument case.
