Welcome from the Headteacher
Dear Parents/Guardians,
As this Term 5 edition of the QEHS Newsletter reaches you, public examinations are now well underway. The levels of focus and determination seen to date amongst the students currently sitting their GCSE and A Level papers certainly bodes well for the results to come this summer. As the adage goes, ‘You get out what you put in’, and these cohorts have certainly put in plenty of discretional effort over the past two years! Ahead of beginning their study leave, students of course revelled in their respective Leavers' Days which, as always, were very special and emotional affairs. As well as taking the time to reflect on past experiences and to laugh/cringe/cry (delete as applicable!) at photos of themselves from ‘bygone years’, spontaneous appreciation was also shown for the members of staff who have taught and supported them pastorally over the past five to seven years. In particular I would like to similarly acknowledge here the key role played by Mrs Crick, Mrs Coupland and Mrs Walsh as Heads of Year. Resourceful, empathetic, resilient and consummately professional, they have been there as ports of call for students whatever the issue, whatever the circumstances. Thank you, colleagues!
As our Year 11 and Year 13 students reach the conclusion of their studies, the successes experienced by those youngsters across the rest of the school continues to impress. Whether personal success, as demonstrated by Rebekah and Luke receiving the Rotary Club Young Citizen Awards and by Hibba, Annabelle, Mackenzie and Iris with their Commendations; or by Elsie, Phoebe, Ryan, Harrison and Charles through their sporting prowess; or as a group, ably demonstrated by our Chemistry Olympians and Sports Leaders, what the student body of QEHS is able to achieve continues to be remarkable. Winners one and all!
This term we have said farewell to Mrs Clarke (English), Mr Stephenson (Maths) and Mrs Fotheringham (HR). Mrs Clarke leaves us to take up a new position at a local college. She joined QEHS in 1999 and over these twenty-four years has secured promotions to Second in Department in 2003 and then Head of English in 2015. Mrs Clarke has had an incredibly positive impact on the delivery of English over the past two and a half decades at QEHS and has been pivotal in the promotion of literacy across the school. Any students lucky enough to have been taught by Mrs Clarke will appreciate the genuine passion she has for literature and the English language. We wish her well. Mr Stephenson meanwhile has taken the decision to return to post-16 teaching. Over the past 14 months Mr Stephenson has made a valuable contribution to the Maths Department and his calm, considerate and measured approach to teaching and learning has been appreciated by many. Finally, Mrs Fotheringham returns to teaching in the primary sector. Across HR and Cover teams alike, Mrs Fotheringham has demonstrated a genuine can-do attitude at all times. Thank you all for enhancing the Queenies experience during your time at the school.
Elsewhere in the newsletter you will read of recent trips and visits to Lincoln Castle, the University of Lincoln, the Etihad Stadium as well as details of the new Senior Student Team and the early work of our School Council now under new leadership. Indeed, the fresh 2024-25 Senior Student Team have already been very active during their first few weeks in post, presenting to the Governing Body and also to parents at the recent Parental Working Group which focussed on Leadership for Learning. Mrs Antkowiak’s article, meanwhile, exudes genuine passion for all things mathematical as she reviews the Primary Maths Challenge held in school in April, whilst Mrs Hucke-Rice’s piece on the Spring Concert wonderfully articulates just how much an event like this means to parents and students alike – priceless!
All-in-all, what the content of this Term 5 newsletter demonstrates is just how proactive the wonderful students of QEHS are when it comes to seizing opportunities. Long may this continue as each cohort inspires the next. What, however, almost every departing Year 11 or Year 13 student commented upon as they passed through the school gates for the last time, is just how fast their days at QEHS have passed. The message then to all students across the Queenies community is to make the most of everything this wonderful school has to offer – seize the day!
Thank you for your ongoing support and do enjoy a lovely half term break with family and friends.
Kind regards,
Mr R Eastham
Headteacher
Term 5 Headteacher's Commendation Award
Following recommendations from staff, congratulations are in order for Iris H (10C), Annabelle W (8C), Mackenzie F (10B) and Hibba A (7B) for being awarded this term's Headteacher's Commendation Awards as detailed below:
Leadership for Learning - Iris H (10C) nominated by Mr Burge
For continuous demonstration that she is an outstanding student athlete. Iris is currently performing at the highest level of for her age group in netball and travels multiple times a week to Manchester and not getting back home until past midnight on at least two evenings a week. She continues to represent the school in a wide range of sports and is fully committed to her academic studies.
Behaviour for Learning - Annabelle W (8C) nominated by Mrs Redgate-Large
For exemplary behaviour every lesson, always engages well and produces lots of excellent, high quality written work.
Learning to Learn - Mackenzie F (10B) nominated by Mr Stretton
For consistently behaving in an exemplary manner in Business. Further, Mackenzie has focused in all her lessons, joined discussions openly and fearlessly, and always tried her best. Mackenzie typifies that quiet endeavour and search for excellence inherent in QEHS students.
Learning to Learn - Hibba A (7B) nominated by Mrs Regan and Mrs Walker
For unbelievable progress this year. Hibba has always achieved very well, but she has recently found ‘another gear’ and would not be out of place in a GCSE class. Initially hesitant to showcase her natural flair, she has worked on the sophistication of her extended writing and completed a lot of extra work at home. It is a pleasure to mark her book!
Senior Student Team for 2024-25
Following an unbelievably competitive selection process, the following students have been appointed to the Sixth Form Senior Student Team.
All candidates who applied can hold their heads high, as the standard was incredible this year, and the camaraderie demonstrated across this cohort really shone through.
School Council
The week commencing 12/05/24, School Council has been reintroduced with its new reformed structure. It will now be run by the three new Deputy Head students: Joshua R (Deputy Head Boy); Khushi H (Deputy Head Girl); Jessica H (Deputy Head Girl.) The main agenda for the School Council was multi-faith rooms. Three members of the Religion and Wellbeing Senior Team group provided information on their intentions with these multi-faith rooms going forward. Accompanied by the School Business Director and Site Team, their plans involve creating a much more peaceful and accessible place for prayer without the possibilities of distraction. Therefore, the ideas that are put forward and are to be worked on involve: decisions about furniture, to manage the school budget, and colour scheme of the multi-faith room and potential remodelling of the pipe work in the designated room.
Due to the potential cost, budget fundraising ideas have been put forward for this project during the council meeting. Ideas such as: bake sales, sports events and a wide variety of other initiatives, were all put forward, and form captains will be used to get the opinions of their classmates. This remodelled multi-faith room will provide students a safe and comfortable space to spend time for contemplation or for prayer.
Overall, this initiative will aid the schools plans for further enhancing inclusivity for those looking to join the school or for those who are already in it. Another focus point during the meeting was delegation from House Captains to Form Captains, in order to generate a more active role from the younger years that will serve to inspire engagement with House events. This approach will also allow House Leaders to get more input from the younger years. This year, the team has made it clear they plan to focus on achievable goals that benefit people from all areas of our school.

Vintage Gainian
The Gainian Magazine was resurrected at QEHS in 2018 as a record of the outstanding work that goes on, every day at our school. The last version, published in the autumn of 2023 was developed to be a record of the school year and included reports of extra-curricular activities as well as results of competitions and student work. We were surprised and delighted when a local antiques dealer, Mr Hillier, contacted us and let us know that he had a copy of the 1975 version of the magazine, which he offered to donate to the school. Mr Hillier visited us in May and we duly exchanged copies of the magazine before two Sixth Form students gave him a guided tour of the school in action.

Rotary Club Young Citizenship Awards
1) Rebekah O (13S)
Rebekah started volunteering with her local Brownie unit as part of the requirements for her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award five years ago and has continued in this role due to her passion and dedication to helping younger children develop key skills in life by becoming a Team Leader and dedicating one night a week to assist in the running and support of the girls, including camping, PGL activities and day trips.
To show her commitment to the role, Rebekah has undergone appropriate safeguarding training to ensure she can fulfil her role to the highest standard and hopes to continue in this role in between studying at university.
Rebeka’s commitment to giving back to the community has shown through in her work experience at the Open-Door Café in Bardney, a volunteer dependant coffee shop that operates a community grocery store two days a week, selling reduced priced produce obtained from supermarkets instead of being thrown out due to short shelf-life. Rebekah’s work experience involved assisting in all aspects of the business, serving customers and in the café and the shop as well as helping in the weekly toddler groups put on by the business.
Rebekah was especially impressed with the overall ethos of the café to reduce the stigma around needing help with the rising costs of living, the open-door policy it has to everyone and anyone, and the aim to be an environmentally friendly business. Rebekah has credited both her role in Brownies and her work experience as helping her build her confidence.
Alongside these commitments and studying for her A Levels, Rebekah has shown her dedication to serving the QEHS community with her many roles within the school, such as her prefect role in Year 12, teaching revision techniques and activities to Year 7s, mentoring Year 8 and 9 students in their general schoolwork and assisting in House events. Additionally, Rebekah has found time to take on the role of Subject Ambassador for both Sociology and Psychology, assisting in public events such as open days and evenings and mentoring Year 10 Sociology students.
Rebekah has demonstrated an unwavering desire to give back to community and use her skills to help anyone who would benefit from it, alongside fulfilling her academic goals of studying Sociology at university. Rebekah is a true role model and a credit to the school.
2) Luke I (13C)
Luke has been a member of the Lincoln Air Cadet squadron for many years, achieving the rank of Flight Sergeant and putting Luke in a very respected position where he helps to manage the running and administration of squadron nights, from taking attendance to teaching the training syllabus to younger cadets including first aid to the cadets and staff of the squadron on the weekends.
As Flight Sergeant, Luke has taken on a more prominent role of overseeing the induction of the training flight to prepare them for the activities involved in being an Air Cadet. As a NCO, he attends staff meetings to provide a voice for the cadets and to further develop the squadron as a whole.
As a cadet, Luke has participated in many community activities such as bag packing for customers at his local supermarket and as Mayor of Lincoln Cadets, Luke has represented the squadron at the Battle of Britain commemoration and the switching on of the Christmas lights alongside the Mayor of Lincoln.
In school, Luke uses his love of Science and Maths to mentor younger students and to provide added assistance in Maths lessons. He has served as a STEM Ambassador to encourage younger students in their pursuit of STEM subjects through assisting in the STEM Club and at the STEM Fair.
On a wider scale, Luke has served QEHS as a House Captain and a member of the Senior Student Team to promote the school through open days and other public events.
Luke also finds the time to coach junior hockey on a Saturday as Junior Club Captain, serving on the committee to develop the club and helping the club achieve promotion to the second highest English hockey league, thus now having the chance to play at the Olympic Stadium in London.
Alongside his aim to pursue engineering at university, Luke has demonstrated he is willing to happily dedicate himself to helping others and has proved beyond doubt to be a true asset to the school and wider community.

Year 11 - Class of 2024
The Year 11 Leavers' Day was a resounding success with our students joining us for a final goodbye and to share memories. They had a morning of fun and ice cream!
Year 13 - Class of 2024
The Year 13 Leavers' Day was also filled with special moments and memories including ice cream in the sunshine. Our senior students looked amazing in their old school uniforms!
Work Experience - Almost there!
For students who have opted to take part in work experience and have been successful in securing a placement, we are now moving towards them towards taking up their work experience placements in July.
To enable our employers to ensure the safety of your child and their own employees, could I ask that parents notify the employer of any medical needs that their child has before the placement starts. Employers will be asked to destroy any sensitive information after the placement is finished.
A written job description and risk assessment for the placement will be sent home from School with the student, as and when the placements have been risk assessed and are approved to use by our Health and Safety partners, Safety Measures.
We do have a lot of new employers this year, as well as existing ones whose current risk assessments or insurances have expired, which has increased the volume of checks needed. Please be assured that we are working with Safety Measures to get these placements finalised as soon as possible, but some, whose insurance expires in late June, details may not come through until the week before placements start. If any particular problems arise with getting placements visited and risk assessed, especially getting in contact with the right person at the placement, Mrs Thorpe will always notify the student immediately so that the situation can be addressed in a timely manner.
Upon receipt of the placement paperwork, please check the details and if you are in any doubt about dress code, hours of work, mealtimes, etc, do please contact the employer for clarification. The job description for some of the placements asks the students to “confirm their hours of work before the placement starts” and they need to act on this, by getting in touch with the employer as soon as they receive the paperwork.
A small number of students have indicated that they may be doing irregular days or hours and confirmation of these days/hours of work MUST be given to Mrs Thorpe as soon as possible, especially if evening work is involved as school will need to arrange an emergency contact for students working outside normal school office hours.
Thank you for supporting your child as they have faced the challenge of organising work experience in a business world where the aftermath of the pandemic is still impacting on available places. As always, we look forward to hearing about the students’ experiences when they return to school. The glowing reports from employers about the students from QEHS always make the hard work worthwhile!

QEHS Parental Working Group
Our most recent Parental Working Group session took place on Thursday 2 May, after school. The chosen topic for this session was Student Leadership (Leadership for Learning) opportunities at Queen Elizabeth’s High School and our aim was to take a look at the current options and see how we can improve them for all year groups. Along with some members of the Senior Leadership Team and parents, the new Student Senior Team also attended this meeting to provide a realistic overview, from a student's perspective, of the Student Leadership opportunities available.
The evening started off with an introduction of what our objectives were for the session. We then provided parents with a brief summary of each of the current leadership roles that the school has to offer for students, from Year 7 to Sixth Form. Next, we organised two activities where each group of parents and members of the Student Senior team created a mindmap of their ideas for improvement and what we should aspire for student leadership to mean at QEHS. After each activity, we opened the floor to discussion of the ideas that stood out best.
The takeaway from the evening was incredible and it was lovely to hear the fresh ideas from the parents. From ideas regarding improving the Peer Listening service, to creating new leadership opportunities like getting younger students involved with marketing to primary schools to provide a friendly face, our Senior Team looks forward to taking the parents' ideas forward and working toward the next steps to making them a reality.

Year 8 World of Work Day
We carry out a comprehensive programme of careers orientated information, advice and guidance at QEHS. All students have access to the Unifrog online portal which offers a wealth of advice, guidance and information. This sits alongside the careers lessons which are integrated into our PSHE programme and bespoke activities for each year group. One of the bespoke activities aimed at our Year 8 students is a World of Work Day. Students spend a lesson with a variety of employers, hear about that employer's career and attempt some tasks that that employer will face in their day-to day work. This year’s day involved students working out a student budget, checking accounting spreadsheets, planning a housing estate with Lincolnshire County Council, checking legal documents, creating a marketing plan for a new training shoe and doing some hands on medical work. The students thoroughly enjoyed their day and the employers were delighted at their enthusiasm and engagement.

The Primary Maths Challenge: Adding Fun to Numbers!
On Tuesday morning, 23 April, the Upper School Hall of Queen Elizabeth’s High School echoed with excitement as eight primary schools eagerly gathered for the Primary Maths Challenge. With pencils sharpened and brains ready, students geared up for a day filled with mathematical marvels.
Throughout the event, laughter and friendly banter filled the air as teams from different schools bonded over their shared love for numbers. From quick mental calculations to collaborative problem-solving, every moment was a testament to the joy of mathematics.
As the competition progressed through four thrilling rounds of questions, students showcased not only their mathematical skills but also their teamwork and resilience. Each challenge was met with determination and enthusiasm, turning the event into a true celebration of learning and camaraderie.
When the final scores were tallied, it was Handel House Preparatory School that emerged victorious, the students' beaming faces a testament to their hard work and dedication. Following closely behind were Frances Olive Anderson CoE Primary School in second place and Morton Trentside Primary School in a well-deserved third.
Behind the scenes, none of this would have been possible without the tireless efforts of Mrs Hopkinson, whose meticulous planning ensured a seamless and enjoyable experience for all. Special thanks also go to Mrs Senescall, and the enthusiastic Sixth Formers whose support added an extra layer of magic to the event.
As the day drew to a close, participants left with smiles on their faces and a newfound appreciation for the beauty of mathematics. The Primary Maths Challenge had not only tested the students' skills but also ignited a passion for learning that will continue to inspire them in the years to come.
Adding to the excitement, the winners were thrilled to receive their well-deserved prizes, presented by Mr Eastham. These tokens of recognition served as a tangible reminder of their achievements and fuelled their enthusiasm to continue exploring the wonders of mathematics.
Congratulations to all the participants for making the Primary Maths Challenge a resounding success! Here's to many more adventures in the world of numbers and endless possibilities. Keep counting, calculating, and reaching for the stars!

Spring Concert
A student Review
For the schools Spring Concert I took part in the school orchestra, choir and our own sixth form band. For the ensemble’s, I attended rehearsals once a week and it was amazing to see how the pieces came together over time. At first, I struggled with some of my parts, but the teachers in the Music department were very helpful and worked closely with me until I could play them comfortably. Some of the songs that we performed were new to me. However, I enjoyed learning and playing them with my band mates. My friends and I also formed a sixth form band for the concert. Deciding a song was a small challenge for us. There were too many good suggestions but sadly we could only pick one. We finalised on 'Blame it on the Boogie' by The Jackson Five and when we performed the audience reaction was incredible! I had the best time working towards and showcasing the Spring Concert and am eagerly looking forward to the next one!

A Parent Review
To all those concerned - What a wonderful evening!
A very big thank you for the Spring Concert 2024. One of the best, with so many students taking part and such a variety of instruments. It clearly demonstrated that both staff and students from all years have a great love of Music. The talent of the students at QEHS is immeasurable and the dedication from the staff invaluable. It was amazing to listen to soloists and groups alike, all dedicated to performing at a very high level. The variety of pieces from different genres and disciplines was most impressive. The amount of work and preparation from staff and students is clearly apparent. For me, one of the highlights of the evening was the finale. This brought together every single student who performed on the night. It showed just how many students had been involved across the evening as they all came together as one to perform the final piece on their own instruments. It made for a beautiful conclusion. Many congratulations to all who took part. Thanks goes also to the smiling site staff directing us to parking and also to front of house and those who tidy up after us all - they make it a safe and pleasant place for us to gather. Thank you so much - What a wonderful evening!

Sports Leader Qualification (SLQ) - Sports Leaders
This year's Your Time Sports Leaders event was the best attended so far!
90 Year 7 students signed up to take part in the day that was lead by nine Year 10 students: Georgina, Mackenzie, Poppy, Isabelle, Ava, Zarna, Alice, Georgina and Grace. The event was a great success and both leaders and students thoroughly enjoyed the day! The day consisted of team building activities, bench ball and a rounders competition with teams competing against each other.
The Year 10 leaders also ran an extra-curricular club throughout the year for younger students to attend and was one of the most popular clubs attended.
Congratulations to the Year 10 Your Time Leaders who have worked so hard to upskill themselves over the year, completing the online modules, working together to overcome problems, building their communication skills as a group.

Service Student LiNCHigher Trip to Lincoln University
On the morning of 26 March 2024, we left school to embark on our trip to Lincoln University. This trip was an opportunity for us service students to find out our true identities, and perhaps learn a bit more about service children from other schools.
As we reached Lincoln, we were met with positivity from the team at the University, and guided to the lecture room where we would spend our day. The room had a positive aura about it, and we felt welcome from the moment we first stepped in.
Our first activity of the day was to move around the room and find out more about each other. This was really engaging, as there were many other schools there and I feel that the interaction with other people in the same position as myself truly resonated with me. Even the simple little questions like if they had any siblings or pets made us all feel a little more comfortable with each other. We also won a lot of prizes including hats, keyrings and pens.
After we had finished this first activity, we were left to our own thoughts to discover our own identities as service children. We had been shown a few slides and some inspiration from others about what they felt but were strongly reminded that everyone’s experience is individual and unique, and that finding it would be a crucial step in understanding one’s own feelings.
To back up these thoughts, we were given the opportunity to represent our identity and feelings through badge making. This activity was one of the highlights of the day, as we could personalise them to whatever we pleased, and the only limit was our own imagination. There were a range of badges from poppies and naval fleets to aircrafts and our homes. It felt like we were truly beginning to understand who we were.
After we made badges, we had a campus tour of Lincoln University, and the history behind certain buildings and important alumni from the University. This was really intriguing, as there were a lot of small details that we wouldn’t have known about unless we had been on the trip, including how involved and hands on the students at the University are.
We then looked at our future and we thought about what we are good at and enjoy now and how we can use that to work out a pathway to progress through GCSEs and A Levels and on to university.
Overall, I think the trip to Lincoln University not only helped us to find out who we are now, but who we were in the past and who we are going to be in the future.

Year 7 trip to Lincoln Castle
On Tuesday 14 and 15 May, Year 7 went on an exciting trip to Lincoln castle!
This is my perspective of what we did.
When I arrived at school, we went to form as normal and at 9:00 we got ready with our forms in the bus park to depart. After around half an hour on the bus we arrived at Lincoln Castle. We walked a short distance across the street and went inside. The moment we stepped inside, the castle looked exactly like I imagined.
Once all the forms had arrived we lined up and went inside the classrooms where we put our belongings and our form (7A) went to the castle walls. After a terrifyingly tall spiral staircase, we were above the walls. It really felt like we were on top of the world.
After we walked for a bit, our tour guide explained lots about the castle's past and interesting details. Personally, I found it fascinating that it was built so long ago!
After having walked the walls, we headed to the prison, where the inmates were kept. We got to see real handcuffs used by the wardens and even got to hold them! Next, we got some time to explore the cells ourselves. It was particularly eerie knowing that people spent so long locked in here. We even got to see the place where they would listen to a priest.
After we had lunch, we got to walk 10 minutes down the street to the museum which was very cool as we got to see real artifacts like swords and an odd item called the Roman dodecahedron. Overall this was my favourite part of the trip as it was all very well preserved.
All in all, the trip was a fun time to learn about the people who lived before us!

School Uniform
As we approach the summer it is timely to reflect on our uniform standards.
From the start of Term 6, Form Tutors will be conducting uniform checks at the start of each day, supported by Heads of Year and the Leadership Team.
Any students who are not in the correct school uniform will be asked to correct their infringement or remove items of jewellery that they should not be wearing in school. Parents will be contacted if the uniform infringement cannot be rectified immediately in school.
The focus will be to challenge any students who are wearing items that are not part of the QEHS standard uniform such as trainers, hooped earrings, nose piercings etc. These items will be confiscated and returned to students at the end of the day. Repeated infringements may result in parents being required to pick up confiscated items. Anything else that also comes to our attention which deviates from our School Uniform Policy will also be addressed. The QEHS School Uniform Policy can be found on our website and a copy of the uniform list is below.
We do hope that you will support us by ensuring your child is aware of and adheres to the required dress code expected of them as a student of QEHS.
