Message from the Headteacher
Dear QEHS Community,
Another incredible academic year of successes and triumphs, and another fantastically frenetic final term! In short, then, the Queenies way! In this newsletter, a bumper edition of reviews, achievements, accolades and accomplishments, you will read all about just how much has been going on and see just how incredible our students have been once again this term. In addition to delivering a first-class academic educational experience, here at QEHS we pride ourselves on the personal development offer that students can readily engage with. Long recognised as a strength of the school, the co-curricular offer is something that can make a real difference to youngsters’ learning journey and lived experience through school. Read on to find out what we mean!
Whether reading of students’ all conquering experiences at the Lincolnshire Show, or taking on details of proms, commendations, life on the Sixth Form Senior Student Team, MaDD and DAT evenings, EPQs or reading challenges, you will be sure to be amazed by just how much our wonderful students get up to. Throw into the mix a ‘High School Musical’, 2392 hours of DofE driven community work, fieldtrips, university visits, fund raising, D-Day and Armed Forces Day celebrations alongside details of sporting and music successes and we have a term to remember. Do please enjoy the content.
As this academic year draws to a close, it is always important to thank the work of those colleagues leaving the school for the significant contributions they have each made to life at QEHS. This term we say farewell to: Mrs Rider (Head of Social Sciences) who is taking on the Head of Geography role at another school after 31 years at QEHS; Mrs Thorpe (History teacher and Work Related Coordinator) who retires after 21 years at QEHS; Mr Dawson (Biology and UCAS/EPQ Lead) who moves on to a new position at a 16-18 college after 21 years; Mr Roy (Psychology) who is relocating to Huddersfield also after 21 years of service; Mrs Seddon (Science Technician) after 6 years; Mrs Coles (Midday Supervisor) after three years; and Mrs Sellars (Biology and Darwin House Leader) who has been promoted to Lead Teacher of Science following a year and a half with us. Thank you so much for everything each of you have done during your time here at Queenies. Good luck and very best wishes for the next exciting stages of your professional and personal life journeys.
Finally, may I extend my personal thanks and appreciation to you, the parents/guardians who entrust the staff of QEHS to make a positive difference on a daily basis to the lives of your children. In partnership we continue to work together to ensure the values of Tradition, Achievement and Opportunity continue to ring true and become part of the youngsters’ DNA who attend this fine school. In an increasingly turbulent and unpredictable world, the attributes of resilience, empathy and loyalty we seek to instil will serve them well for years to come. There is no formal qualification in these qualities, but much can be done to hone such virtues. Together, we share this sense of purpose.
Wishing you all a relaxing and enriching summer break through time spent with family and friends.
Kind regards,
Mr R Eastham

Meet the Sixth Form Senior Team
Sixth Form Senior Team Progress
As the Head Girl, I am delighted to share the progress our Sixth Form Senior Team has made in this last term. The main focus of our aims has been promoting and enhancing the school experience for students both current and upcoming as we have been involved in exciting events such as Taster Days and exploring ways to improve matters we as students are passionate about.
As previously mentioned, one of the highlights of this term was the Year 12 Taster Day, where we welcomed prospective students to experience Sixth Form life firsthand. A particular highlight of the day was getting to know the students through games of rounders whilst enjoying the warm afternoon weather. This was followed by a brief assembly in which Sixth Form Senior Team involvement consisted of presenting a series of snapshots offering advice for the upcoming year. We hope that the day showcased many of the advantages QEHS Sixth Form provides, including the academic, extra-curricular, and personal development opportunities available.
Another focal point of the term was helping with the Year 7 Taster Days. It was a wonderful experience as we got involved in welcoming the Year 6 students to their first experience of QEHS. It was a delight to watch them make friends whilst getting involved in various lunchtime activities, such as playing football on the field with Tobin and Jess, learning the chords to Sweet Caroline with Khushi, and an exciting drama activity with Maddi. We hope that the beginning of their high school journey has been a memorable one, and the start of seven great years to come.
To enhance our school’s digital presence and provide valuable insights into various subjects, the Marketing and Outreach department of our team has been focusing on gathering footage to create a series of subject videos for our Sixth Form social media presence. Featuring both teachers and classroom experiences, these videos will seek to highlight the unique aspects of the teaching offered at our Sixth Form - showcasing course content and classroom dynamics. We look forward to releasing these at the beginning of next year.
In readiness for September, our Student Leadership department has been working on defining some of the key student leadership roles available throughout the school. To do this, they have been reviewing parent feedback acquired from the Leadership For Learning Parental Working Group session, along with conversations with the appropriate staff and students. We hope that this can strengthen the foundations of what student leadership means at QEHS, whilst drawing attention to areas for improvement and even more causes for celebration.
Endeavouring to improve awareness and facilities for well-being and multi-faiths whilst creating an inclusive environment, our Multi-faith and Well-being department has been exploring ways to make the multi-faith rooms around the school more welcoming and fit for purpose. As a team, we have also been considering various fundraising activities to support this. The department has also been working to further promote the sanitary stations around the school for student access, endeavouring to support students in all aspects of life.
Reflecting on this term's accomplishments, I am incredibly proud of all of the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the Sixth Form Senior Team. I hope that these early achievements are just the beginning of our work towards further enhancing the school experience and supporting our fellow students.
Warm regards,
Eboney A (12A)
Head Girl

Young Persons Advisory Group (YPAG) - PANDA Study
Our first session with Dr. Gregory Whitely was an introduction to the project titled, “improving Pain mAnagement for childreN and young people attendeD by Ambulance (PANDA): A realist formed intervention development and feasibility study”. Throughout our time working in the YPAG, we became involved in many activities such as designing and reviewing key study documents aimed at children and young people. This included age appropriate recruitment leaflets, participant information sheets, and consent forms. Furthermore, we were involved in discussions about what the expectations of children and young people may be when attended by ambulance which facilitated the development of the initial programme theory. Additionally, we reviewed possible interview methods for each age group.
Working with Dr. Gregory Whitely on this study was very interesting and it was a great new experience and opportunity for learning. It was also nice to work with other year groups on this project and listen to everyone's unique perspectives. We thoroughly enjoyed participating in this and are glad we had the chance to do so.
Khushi H (12D)
Throughout the course of this past year, myself and a few others have partaken in the study: improving Pain mAnagement for childreN and young people attendeD by Ambulance (PANDA) conducted by Dr. Gregory Whitley. Our sessions usually involved working collaboratively with fellow participants to discuss and provide feedback on the ideas presented by Dr. Whitley. Some of the work we completed consisted of designing leaflets for the project and improving interview questions to receive more concise responses from study candidates. These discussions have really helped develop my communication skills and my confidence during group activities. This experience gave me a deeper insight into research and working collaboratively with others as well as honing my problem solving and decision making abilities. I had a very pleasant time working on this project and I hope to be involved in more in the future.
Anu V (12C)
I signed up for the YPAG PANDA study over the summer of 2023, unsure of what I was getting myself into, however, I was curious of the outcome and eager to learn from this experience. Overall, working with Dr. Gregory Whitley has been a hugely positive experience. The YPAG has met typically termly over the past year. In the meetings, we have delved deep into details of the PANDA research project, analysing each step of the PANDA recruitment process meticulously, which has allowed me to realise the true extent of what goes into studies like this. This involved analysis and evaluation of leaflets and more recently, the structure and questions involved in the interviews conducted. Personally, the YPAG PANDA study has allowed me to develop my analytical skills, which has transferred to my A Level studies. I look forward to working with Dr. Whitley again next year, and seeing the development of the PANDA study beyond Year 13.
Martha E (12S)
Biology Challenge
This term saw 82 Year 9 and 10 students take part in the Biology Challenge which consisted of two exam papers that put each student’s Biology knowledge to the test. We are incredibly proud of all the students who gave the challenge a go and of those 82 students, 17 achieved Bronze, 4 achieved Silver and 1 Gold (Adebola O). For context, only 60% of students nationally achieved any certificate at all, only 5% achieved Gold nationally, 10% Silver and 15% Bronze so they all did incredibly well. Next year will hopefully see even more of our students take part and some of our current Year 9 students might even try the challenge a second time!
Miss L Ellis
Head of Biology
Library Challenge
Here at QEHS we highlight the importance of daily reading, particularly during Key Stage 3, to develop an extensive vocabulary, strong comprehension skills and an appreciation of authors’ different styles. Our fiction library is divided into genres such as Science Fiction, Crime or Humour and we encourage students to explore different authors and different genres. This year we have been running an optional Library Challenge to read (and pass a quiz) on books from six different genres. Those students who had completed the challenge by the end of Term 5 have been presented with a certificate and congratulatory letter by Mr Eastham. Special congratulations go to Charlotte B (8C), Jacob B (7A), Martha H (7D), Sophie K (7S), Molly S (7B), Eva T (7A), Janson W (7A) and Adam W (8S) who have made more than 2 years progress with their reading since September and were awarded a book each in recognition of this achievement.

Year 8 Extended Project
Term 6 has seen Year 8 students taking part in their Extended Project. During this time, students have been working in the computer rooms with their Form Tutors to design a project around an area of interest.
Over the past few weeks, we have seen some fantastic designs, ranging from sensory stations all the way to learning about house plants. It has been a wonderful experience to see students engage with this initiative so well, and to get to know what students are passionate about outside of school.
On the day itself, students set up their own stall and presented to both Year 7 students and parents and guardians. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for the students, and I hope that they thoroughly enjoyed this.
Miss Z Allen
Head of Year 8
This week, Year 8 presented their Extended Projects to an audience of Year 7 students, parents, families, and teachers. We have been working on these special projects for the last four weeks. I chose to focus on the Star Wars films, stories, reception, and legacy, and presented this on a PC. Other students created posters, interactive challenges, and displays on a range of subjects from art to sport to pot plants and even music festivals. It was a really fun project, where we had the choice of what to focus on and the time to develop it. It was great to see everyone's different interests.

Celebrating Creativity and Innovation at the End of Year Design Art and Technology (DAT) Showcase Event
Over the last few days our school has come alive with creativity and innovation as we celebrated the return of the Design, Art, and Technology exhibition. On Monday 8 June, this culminated in the End of Year Showcase event. After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a delight to once again open our doors to an array of extraordinary student work, demonstrating the remarkable talent and dedication of our pupils across various year groups.
The event was a vibrant display of artistic and creative prowess. Year 8 students impressed visitors with their meticulously crafted benches, showcasing their skills and creative designs. Year 9 students displayed their imaginative High School Musical set designs, providing a glimpse into the world of theatre production design.
Year 10 students presented their impressive architectural models, reflecting their understanding of structural design and aesthetics, alongside the main event of the GCSE and A Level students presenting a vast array of displays that included intricate art pieces, innovative design projects, and cutting-edge technological creations. The Senior Students' work highlighted not only their technical skills but also their ability to think critically and creatively.
The showcase was well-attended, with enthusiastic support from parents, teachers, and peers. The atmosphere was further enriched by the Music Department, which provided a beautiful background score, adding a harmonious touch to the visual feast.
The Year 9 Food students contributed to the event’s success by preparing and serving an assortment of delicious canapés. Their culinary skills were highly praised, and the delightful treats added a gourmet touch to the evening by serving the refreshments, with smiles and enthusiasm.
The End of Year Design, Art, and Technology Showcase was a testament to the resilience and creativity of our students. We are incredibly proud of all our students and look forward to seeing what can be displayed next year.

Year 9 Design and Technology Set Design
This term, our Year 9 Design and Technology (D&T) students took on an exciting and creative challenge to design and build the set for this year's school production of High School Musical. The project, a collaboration with the Drama Department, provided an excellent opportunity for our students to apply their skills in a real-world context while contributing to a much-anticipated school event.
The students were given four weeks to complete their task, working both independently and in small teams. Their mission was to bring to life the vibrant and dynamic world of East High, the setting for High School Musical. This involved creating a variety of set pieces, including flags, banners, scoreboards, and locker flats.
The D&T workshops buzzed with activity over the past month as students brainstormed, sketched, and built their designs. They applied a range of techniques and materials, showcasing their creativity and technical skills. The result was a set that not only met but exceeded the expectations of both the D&T and Drama departments.
Last week, the culmination of their hard work was revealed at the D&T Showcase Evening. Parents, teachers, and fellow students were invited to view the set pieces before they took place on stage for the school production. The showcase was a resounding success, with attendees praising the students' ingenuity and craftsmanship.
The set is now ready and will be featured in the performances of High School Musical later this week. The collaboration between the D&T and Drama departments has not only enhanced the quality of the production but also highlighted the talent and dedication of our students.
We look forward to seeing the final production and celebrating the hard work of everyone involved. Congratulations to the Year 9 D&T students on their outstanding achievement!

The Lincolnshire Show
On Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 June, QEHS were part of the Lincolnshire Show. Two teams were entered into the Farmgate Education Competition. I am thrilled to share the news that QEHS scooped both first and second place!
Wowing members of the public and judges alike, the winning group was led by Ms P Worrell competing in the 'Farming - Then, Now & The Future' category. This group was made up of Jake H, Tom B, George H, Charlie D, Finn O, Ethan S, Adam W (8S).
In second place came Mrs N Spawton's group who competed in the 'Gen Z-ero Climate Leaders of the Future' category. This group comprised Angelina G, Tom C, Theodore S and Erin Y G (7S).
Both groups had to speak to the public and other schools, detailing what they did in their respective research projects and what they had learnt. Each group then had to present their work to judges and answer questions from them. Also in attendance, helping to run the exhibit in the Farmgate Marquee on Wednesday was Tom B-R, Thea C, Madeline W (12S) and Kally F (12D).
On the Thursday Tom B-R (12S), Jamie S (12C), Charlie D (12B), Tudor M (12A) and Sophie C (12C) were working on a 'Science of Soil' project, where visiting students to their stand had to work out which type of soil they could see under microscopes, pH test different soil samples, and identify differing invertebrate from leaf litter. They did a fabulous job working with the public and school groups, telling them about the school, our STEM Fair, as well as explaining and facilitating the practical offering.
Massive thanks are extended to Ms P Worrell and Mrs N Spawton for leading on these projects and for putting in so much time with students to ensure they were fully prepared and confident. Also, thanks are extended to our wonderful Science Technician Team, in particular Miss D Howe and Mr C McInerney who helped with the models, as well as Mrs R Roberts and Mrs K Seddon for helping on the stand, and finally to Mr D Hearnshaw for being here, there and everywhere, helping out in all ways possible. A real team effort!
Very well done everyone!
Mr R Eastham
Headteacher
On Wednesday 19 and Thursday 20 June QEHS was represented at The Lincolnshire Show by two teams of students who entered the School’s Challenge Competition, as well as a team of two staff and eight STEM ambassadors who ran an interactive learning activity in the Farm Gate Education Marquee.
The School’s Challenge Competition was launched in school by Mrs Spawton and Ms Worrell in March. Shortly afterwards two teams were formed. The team consisting of Theodore S, Angelina G, Erin Y G and Tom C (7S), who worked with Mrs Spawton on the 'Gen Z-Ero Climate Leaders Of The Future' project. The project asked the students to review and research the school’s current environmental and sustainability performance. The students created a 3D model of the school and designed innovative and idealistic solutions to improve the school’s environmental and carbon impact. This included attaching solar panels to the roof, as well as gutters to collect rain water which could be used to flush in the toilets. The students decided to use a water wheel which was to be powered by the collected water to generate electricity. They also designed a horseshoe magnet and wire which could be used to convert the sound energy from corridors, the canteen and school bells into useful electrical energy.
Ms Worrell’s team consisted of Ethan S, Charlie D, George H, Finn O, Tom B, Jake H and Adam W (8S). They worked on the 'Farming, Then, Now and The Future' project. The project involved discussing how farming has had to deal with many issues over the years such as labour intensity, increased population, climate change, production costs, mechanisation and what those solutions have looked like and will look like in the future. The students researched older methods of farming, as well as the problems farming currently faces by interviewing local experts from Dyson Farming and Chennells Farming Ltd. They built a model to demonstrate vertical farming methods and then combined a vertical farming and hydroponics model as their vision of what farming might look like in the future.
Both groups worked hard on their projects. They had a day off timetable to put the finishing touches to their models, put together their presentations and then present to a panel of staff. Mr Eastham, who was part of the panel, gave them some top tips to further prepare them for the show competition. On day one of the show both groups engaged incredibly well with the public, describing their projects and how their models worked. The second day saw both teams being judged by a panel of two expert judges. The students presented their projects with confidence and finesse. They were able to talk to the judges about the journey of their projects and how they had used the judging criteria in their planning. Their hard work paid off as the 'Farming Then, Now and the Future' group came first and the 'Gen Z-ero Climate Leaders Of The Future' project came second in the secondary schools group! Both Mrs Spawton and Ms Worrell were really pleased and proud of how the students had represented QEHS. A special thank you must be made to the Science Technicians who helped the students put their model ideas into action.
As well as entering two teams in the School’s Challenge we were also asked to provide an interactive learning activity in the Farm Gate Education marquee around the theme of ‘Super Soils’. We decided to base our activities around the science of soil. Activity one enabled visitors to view soil samples under a microscope and identify whether the soil sample they were looking at was a clay, loam or sandy soil sample. Visitors then learned which crops would grow best in each type of soil. Activity two involved testing the pH of three unidentified soil samples using universal indicator paper. Once visitors had identified whether the soil sample they were experimenting on was acidic, alkaline or neutral they were then asked to match the soil sample to crop that it would best support to give the highest yield. Our final activity allowed visitors to view leaf litter samples with hand lenses and identify the organisms which help make fertile soil. It was an incredibly busy two days with visitors to the stall from 8am-6pm.
A special mention must be made to our fantastic STEM ambassadors: Tom B-R (12S) who attended both days, Kally F (12D), Madeleine W (12S), Thea C (12S), Tudor M (12A), Charlie D (12B), Jamie S (12C) and Sophie C (12C). They engaged with visitors of all ages and were extremely fluent in their explanations of the science behind each experiment. A huge thank you must also be passed on to Mr Hearnshaw, Mrs Roberts and Mrs Seddon who helped the ambassadors to run the stall whilst Mrs Spawton and Ms Worrell were with the school’s challenge teams. Many thanks also to Mrs Spawton who was the other science teacher responsible for organising the learning activity and leading one of the School’s Challenge teams. Finally I would also like to pass on my thanks to the Science Technicians who were so helpful in preparing the equipment needed over the two days. The feedback from the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society education team has been resoundingly positive and we look forward to working with them again next year.
Ms Worrell and Mrs Spawton
Year 9 Students Shine at the Lincolnshire Show
On Thursday 20 June, a group of 40 Year 9 Design & Technology and Food & Nutrition students attended the Lincolnshire Show. This annual event, which celebrates the best of agriculture, food, and crafts, provided a day full of enriching experiences for our students.
Upon arrival, the students were immediately immersed in a vibrant atmosphere, bustling with various attractions and activities. Skilled craftsmen and women demonstrated their expertise, offering a fascinating glimpse into traditional trades and modern innovations. The students were captivated by the live demonstrations, gaining insights into the dedication and precision required in these crafts.
One of the highlights of the day was the extensive display of livestock. Students had the chance to observe a variety of animals up close, learning about their care and the importance of agriculture in our daily lives. This hands-on experience was both educational and inspiring, fostering a deeper appreciation for the hard work that goes into farming.
The careers information section provided valuable resources and guidance for the students, many of whom are beginning to consider their future paths. Representatives from various industries were on hand to discuss potential career opportunities, offering advice and answering questions. This was an eye-opening experience, broadening the students’ horizons and igniting their ambitions.
No visit to the Lincolnshire Show would be complete without indulging in the delightful array of food tastings and demonstrations. Our students sampled a variety of delicious local produce, while live cooking demos showcased culinary skills and provided practical tips that the students eagerly absorbed.
We look forward to our visit again next year.

DofE Students contribute 2392 hours to community work
This year, 105 Year 9 students and 32 Year 12 students have been working towards their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) awards respectively. As part of their award, they have to complete 3, 6 or 12 months of volunteering, giving up an hour a week of their time to help support their local community. This totals 2392 hours over this year. The activities our students have been involved in are wide ranging and include coaching children at sports clubs, litter picking in their local community, helping out at charity shops and completing jobs for elderly residents of their community, amongst many other things. We are incredibly proud of the time and effort these students have given to support the community and offer a huge thank you on behalf of those they have supported. Well done to all involved!

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme (DofE) at QEHS
This has been a very ambitious year for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme at QEHS. 102 Year 9 students have completed their Bronze Award and 32 Year 12 students their Silver. In total, 134 students have completed the DofE sections of volunteering, skills and physical challenges.
Amongst a plethora of activities, students have volunteered in animal welfare centres and homes for the elderly, have learnt to bake, knit and type and have coached football, run half-marathons and mastered the eskimo roll in a canoe!
The students have also attended training days in school and have mastered camp craft, navigation, route planning and first aid. Bronze students tested their skills during a one-night camping and navigation expedition in Clumber Park, where it became clear that some groups needed considerably more practice than others! Silver students completed a two night practice expedition in the Bakewell area of the Peak District and then graduated to the even hillier Edale area for their assessed expedition.
We wish all students the very best of luck with the final stages of the award. Huge thanks also go out to the staff team, headed by Miss Meneer and aided and abetted by the Bronze team leaders of Messrs Watt and Johnson who have all demonstrated that they can manage a large number of students with apparent ease!

Year 7 Geography trip to Edale
One of the best aspects of studying Geography is the opportunity for students to attend field trips and to assist with development projects in other countries. Our repertoire includes visits to Lincoln, Sheffield, Withernsea, Flamborough Head, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and even Costa Rica, The Galapagos Islands, Cambodia, Borneo and Tanzania! Students in Year 7 began their journey of learning outside the classroom with a trip to Edale in The Peak District. Students measured microclimates and gathered data on river cross sections and velocity. Despite the unwanted attention of hostile sheep and the self-inflicted discomfort of cold river water in wellies, students had a smashing time and are now looking forward to writing up their findings.

Year 12 visit the Bishop Grosseteste University
On Tuesday 11 June the Year 12 historians were invited to Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln to complete activities designed to help them prepare for their NEA. The NEA is an extended piece of writing which helps students to work independently and develop sophisticated writing and historical skills. We received a warm welcome and were offered breakfast and received a goody bag which included an interesting, Short Introduction to History, book. The activities focused on specific NEA skills including a workshop on source analysis and use of interpretations, historical writing and a computer session to find historical sources using different academic sites. All activities were very useful for the NEA and the A Level exam, it was an enjoyable day and also provided an opportunity to tour the university campus, meet students and the lecturers and gain some understanding of life at university.

80 Year Anniversary D-Day
To commemorate 80 years of the D-Day landings on 6 June the historian Dan Snow joined with the National Archives to present a live event about the experiences of individuals who were crucial to the success of the single largest seaborne invasion in history. During the live event Dan Snow used documents from the archives so that students could explore stories about a spy, nurse and tank driver and were also able to hear from Brigadier R L Scott-Bowden MBE, the son of one of these inspiring individuals, providing a deeply personal insight into their story. Two students, Ava D and Felicity L (8B) share their review of the afternoon activities below:
Ava D said:
"I found the national archives' live presentation about D-Day very informative and educational. It was interesting to learn about the history of England, and about how we fought in the war.
The information was well presented, and it was helpful to have the resources in a book to look at. Mrs Sacker led us through the presentation, and gave us tasks to do to keep us entertained.
Overall, it was a wonderful afternoon despite a few technical issues, and I would definitely recommend this session to any aspiring historians wanting to educate themselves about D-Day."
Felicity L said:
"I thought the D-Day presentation was an excellent experience and a great activity. It was very interesting to learn about Operation Overlord, which was the turning point that ended WWII and what helped create the world we know.
I am very grateful to have been selected to participate in this event and enjoyed working through the activities and resources which helped me to understand more about the war and the efforts and sacrifices that people made to create this wonderful world!"

Armed Forces Day
QEHS celebrated Armed Forces Day with a flag-raising ceremony and a celebration lunch, bringing together Service Students and staff to honour the brave men and women in uniform.
The event started with the Headteacher Mr Eastham raising the national flag next to the memorial of our fallen ‘old boys’. Mr Eastham reminded everyone of the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces. He thanked the Service Students for attending and spoke about the challenges that they have faced and how we support each other at school.
One of our Governors, Mr Hayward, followed by stating that the students all have different experiences but that they share a unique background which helps them to support each other when needed.
The event then moved to a celebration pizza lunch for everyone! The students chatted with each other, Mr Eastham, Mr Hayward, Mrs Watson and Ms Lambert, who organised the event.
The Armed Forces Day celebration at QEHS was a fun event leaving everyone with a deeper appreciation for our military heroes.

Festival of Friends Celebration at Bishop Grosseteste University
On Thursday 6 June 2024, QEHS attended the Festivals of Friends at Bishop Grosseteste. The Festival of Friends is an annual celebration of Service Students, with many schools and a wide variety of ages attending the event.
The first thing we did upon arriving was set up a display about what QEHS does for its Service Students. This display was made up of an article about a previous trip to the University of Lincoln, alongside more general information about the work done for armed forces students in the school. After that was set up, and a brief introduction from the primary speaker of the event, we went back into the exhibition room to look around the displays set up by the other 26 schools attending the event. Primary schools took up most of the hall and after looking at every display, and taking some notes on what else could be done for armed forces students, we moved on to the campus tour.
The tour was led by two student ambassadors, who had many years of experience at the university. They showed the group the many different study areas, such as a silent room and a social environment, the accommodation, the on-site cinema and many other parts of the campus. They also talked about the wide variety of societies and events and the ease of creating them. Some other key points of the campus were the chapel and multi-faith prayer room, the student union and an area focusing on helping students find jobs or assisting with entrepreneurship. The campus was smaller than Lincoln University, and I feel that this would make it a better university for me as the experience there would feel more personalised.
One of the four main activities was a juggling workshop. Led by Steve Royle, who was a runner up in Britain’s Got Talent last year, we were taught how to juggle starting with one ball (beanbag in our case) and building up to three. We were given tips on how to do it right consistently, such as trying to throw the beanbag up to the same height as a certain point each time. Towards the end of the workshop, we were tasked with getting into a group of five and trying to throw multiple beanbags between us in a consecutive pattern. We joined a group of three others from a different school and I would say that it went quite well.
Finally, the fourth activity was a talk about the Red Arrows. This talk was delivered by three mechanics who work on the Red Arrows and knew a lot about them. They talked about how the pilots are trained, and how expensive it is, along with showing us the uniform that pilots of the Red Arrows must wear. We were also given safety information and told how hard it is for a regular pilot to become a Red Arrow pilot, as it requires a lot of training to make sure they would be able to fly in formation perfectly.
Towards the end of the day, we were taken to a movie cinema where Steve Royle gave us an amazing performance on stage. There was also a video message from an actor called Harry Lawtey who was a Service child and has gone on to star in Hollywood films, followed by a talk by one of the Red Arrow pilots.
At the end of the day, we were presented with an award by the host and had our photo taken in front of our group's symbol, the dandelion.

MaDD Evening
MaDD evening is a celebration of the day to day talent and performance skills we see in the Performing Arts Faculty. MaDD (Music and Dance and Drama) showcases a variety of work from students across all year groups.
Mrs Green, a parent of a Year 8 student, said:
"My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the MaDD evening that we attended. The talent and skills shown by the students was of an amazing standard. We were in awe at the performances and the skill of the musicians. It is fabulous that the school has this amount of young talent and that it is showcased in this amazing way. We are eagerly looking forward to the next MaDD evening at QEHS.
From start to finish the show was amazing and the PAC is a fabulous space. We strongly believe that celebrating young talent is very important to the children involved and that we show them the same amount of commitment and enthusiasm that they obviously put into their own performances.
It was a privilege to be invited to the MaDD evening at QEHS. The young people were incredibly talented and had clearly worked very hard on their performances. The confidence of the young interpretative dancer was amazing. One young lady had written their own music and song, which was fantastic to see. Other performers gave us a sneak preview of the forthcoming High School Musical performance which I am looking forward to seeing. Overall it was a very enjoyable evening and I look forward to seeing the next event."
Elizabeth G (8D) said:
I really enjoyed performing. It was excellent to be able to show how passionate we all are about music and performing and it was really fun to rehearse with everyone, to see people in there element and to show other people our skills. We spend a lot of time practicing the songs, some rewritten by pupils, and the dances that we choreograph. We all loved the experience and were thrilled to be able to showcase our passion for drama and performing.
